To your pet, every day spent with you is a holiday and he/she may not be able to appreciate or understand the noises, the change in routine and all things that go on with the holidays.
Here are some pet safety tips to keep your pet safe and happy during these festive times.
- Stick as close as possible to your pet’s normal routine. Try not to vary feeding, walking and playtime schedules.
- No scraps from the holiday table as yummy as they are to us.
- Remember some guests may be uncomfortable around pets and vice versa. You may want to confine in a room that is quiet and off limits to the crowd-of course-with a favorite toy and you checking in on him every now and then.
- Never allow a pet to lick a glass that has/had alcohol in it.
- Turkey bones are a choking hazard to your dog.
- Keep an eye on the holiday table and secure the leftovers and the trash to prevent your furry baby from foraging and eating something forbidden.
- Holly, mistletoe and those lovely poinsettia plants are poisonous to dogs and cats.
- Electrical decorations low to the ground may get hot and burn your pet on their skin or even their mouths if they are chewers. Also-a bad shock is probable as well as electrocution. Place them out of reach!
- Try to avoid breakable ornaments that may cut a pet’s paws or mouth.
- Tinsel quite dangerous for all our furry friends and could lead to surgery for blocked intestines.
- Live and artificial trees both have sharp needles and are indigestible-keep the tree blocked from the family pet!
- Review canine gifts for safety-small plastic toys or bones may pose choking hazards. Also note country of origin of these products as some do not have high cleanliness standards.
- Burning candles-keep them high and out of the way of your dog’s wagging tail.
- Look forward to the holiday quiet time with your pet and a glass of eggnog and cherish this 24/7 loving gift!
